Network Your Way Into Your Next Opportunity

Apr 12, 2017networking

The AMA Houston monthly luncheons are a valuable support for marketers seeking the latest information and networking opportunities. The members-only job search roundtable, hosted before the luncheons, can also usher you into your next career opportunity if you’re looking (according to reports 40 percent of workers are).

By bringing together job seekers, community leaders and the occasional guest speaker, the roundtable offers the much needed support professionals in the Houston Area need. In 2015, Linkedin reported that 80 percent of resumes are never seen by human eyes. We owe this to the demanding schedules of recruiters and the advent of new technology. Meanwhile, according to recent Jobvite data, roughly 40 percent of new hires were by job referral. That’s good news for members in the group, who each month make a habbit of not only sharing their needs but also how they can fill networking gaps for others.

Whether members join the roundtable to meet new people, learn new tips from recruiters or find a new job search advocate, they can expect to gain a lot of value from their roundtable experience.

Robin Tooms, Vice President of strategy at Savage Brands and honorary board member for AMA Houston currently leads the roundtable. Tooms, a recipient of Houston Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” award for 2010 is currently orchestrating speakers on the topic of branding to help AMA members find their next role.

“There is a great spirit with AMA professionals,” Tooms said.” They are willing to help each other.”

This initiative is part of AMA Houston’s commitment to help our members develop as professionals with the resources we provide as THE marketing connection for Houston. By bringing in recruiters to discuss hiring trends in Houston, and what they have been looking for in certain roles, we hope to better prepare members in their job search. AMA also provides additional resources like job opportunities and postings to help members succeed.

“It feels like the most valuable 30 minutes of my day,” Tooms said. ” It’s a great way to give back to the community.”

The roundtable is hosted every month before the monthly networking luncheon at the Junior League of Houston. Attendance is open to members and no luncheon registration is required to attend. Join us at the next roundtable, during the April Networking Luncheon, April 12.
