The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. We provide the most comprehensive array of animal adoption, shelter, rescue, rehabilitation and other programs and services in the Gulf Coast area. In fact, the Houston SPCA serves two times the number of animals and provides a wider scope of services than any other animal care organization in the region. We intervene on behalf of more than 50,000 animals each year, including cats and dogs; horses and farm animals; small mammals; and native wildlife. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the government, United Way or other animal groups.

We are currently seeking to hire a Communications Specialist. In this role, you will be responsible for various aspects of communications including but not limited to PR and marketing; community outreach and event coordination.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pro-actively research and draft press releases that align and support the organization’s mission

Maintain special event and latest news calendar with updated content

Assist community outreach and education at events and on-site camps, tours

Pro-actively identify and coordinate on-campus events including open houses, special events

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related discipline is required

At least 3-5 years of experience in a Communications or Marketing role or similar

Proven experience as a communications specialist including strong writing, video and editing skills for news releases and social media content

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint Word)

Solid time-management capabilities with a proven ability to deal with multiple tasks

Self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong technical, creative and organizational skills

Ability to assist in gathering content and creatively sharing through digital mediums including the website, social media, and internal sources

Ability to identify potential storytelling opportunities through multimedia channels

Able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evening shifts

Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff

Able to create and sustain positive working relationships within the organization, as well as volunteers and the public

Knowledge of non-profit organizations is an asset

Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus

Knowledge of Spanish is considered an asset

Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for at least eight hours a day; able to lift up to 25 pounds

Able to perform other duties than those listed above may be assigned
