The Public Affairs Department of Rice University is currently seeking to hire a Director of Marketing. In this role, you will report to the Vice President for Public Affairs and serve as a senior member of the leadership team to help guide long-term strategic direction and foster a work environment focused on building relationships and delivering results. You will be charged with providing marketing branding, and communication strategies and tactics that promote a focused, consistent and positive image of the university among internal and external stakeholders and the general public. The selected candidate will manage a team with diverse functions, including web, video, content and social media. The compensation for this role is commensurate with experience and qualifications.


Develop, update and execute a comprehensive, multi-year, measurable marketing strategy aimed at raising Rice’s visibility and reputation

Provide leadership and counsel to university leaders, schools, departments and other units on marketing strategies, projects, special events, paid media and other communications

Build support for and adoption of Rice’s brand identity system and style guidelines

Recruit and train brand builders throughout the university to increase official brand usage

Provide analysis of brand positioning through market research and track brand adoption

Manage the front porch of the university, domain (guide the structure as well as oversight of the content to ensure it represents Rice University and increases traffic)

Develop an annual marketing budget and track return on investment

Oversee strategic communications and marketing initiatives and developing long-range plans and programs to meet organizational objectives for the university

Define and promote the communication and brand strategy for the organization through appropriate channels

Participate in university-wide and individual organizational initiatives, including schools, departments, institutes and centers, and creates cross-functional teams to establish Public Affairs as a strategic partner and thought leader

Manage department operations including the management, development and retention of staff

Set departmental budget, goals and objectives in alignment with organizational goals

Lead market research and analysis efforts and uses the results in developing strategic objectives and tactics

Guide organization to use the results in strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting

Performs all other duties as assigned


Bachelor's Degree with concentration in marketing, public relations, communications, or other relevant discipline

10 years or more of relevant working experience

Experience managing a marketing function at a similar-sized or larger organization

Strong level of experience developing and managing the execution of integrated marketing communications campaigns, including advertising, media planning, direct marketing, e-marketing, social media, analytics and market research

Strong experience identifying and incorporating internal and external creative services and web development resources

Proven experience building strong partnerships and collaborations with other marketing and communications professionals

Experience managing the primary domain experience (.com or .edu).

Proven success in building, embedding and extending a brand and brand positioning by building support with internal constituencies and driving the positioning among external audiences.

Experience in an academic, nonprofit or corporate environment is preferred

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience writing persuasive and promotional communications

Demonstrated ability to build strategic relationships and work effectively in a fast-paced environment as part of a creative, cross-functional communications team

Hands on ability to create and deploy marketing materials

Experience managing a team
