South Texas College of Law Houston is currently seeking to hire a Director of Public Relations and Community Engagement. In this role, you will share the story of South Texas College of Law Houston through effective media and community relations, and build the external reputation of the school through targeted PR campaigns to key audiences, including the legal community nationwide and regional community and business leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop an expert speaker guide and bios

Gain and demonstrate the expertise of relevant professors and staff

Seek out and evaluate the value of event/nomination opportunities

Research and implement effective ways to impact important rankings, develop relationships with media and gain their trust

Effectively use a press release distribution system, and regularly track and report PR activities and placements, rankings and other markers of reputation standing and visibility

Develop comprehensive media and PR strategies to advance the school’s identity (including traditional and new media tools, channels, relationships, opportunities, etc.)

Handle public relations in support of the goals and primary programs and events of STCL Houston

Manage all media contacts and serve as the lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization. Connect media requests to faculty experts, and manage the relationship

Build and expand media contacts to raise visibility of the school across Greater Houston, Texas and the nation

Create and strengthen relationships with media outlets and with individual writers and content producers, with the goal of knowing who will be interested in a particular story or topic, and knowing how to reach them through various communication channels

Develop and share media story pitches proactively and regularly, and ensure STCL Houston has a steady flow of news and feature content flowing through law school-managed channels (website, social, blog, etc.) and out to the media – with a primary focus on external audiences

Ensure PR/communication strategy is consistent and reflects the school’s strategic plan, brand, mission and values

Manage the content for the PR portion of the website by determining appropriate location for stories, press releases, and articles

Advocate on behalf of the school’s brand with external stakeholders and the media across all communications channels and vehicles

Assist AVP, MarCom with crisis communications strategies and implementation, handling the specific responsibilities of contacting media (often early or late) with notifications about closures, weather-related changes in hours, etc., and of crafting emergency messages, texts, etc., as needed

Respond to sensitive issue inquiries as needed, and ensure consistent framing of messages

Assist in the research, writing and editing of InRe magazine articles, speeches/speech research, award nominations, advancement writing, brand/marketing materials, and other writing projects as needed as part of the MarCom writing team

Work with the AVP, MarCom and other senior staff and faculty across the organization to identify internal and external media promotional opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them

Provide ongoing guidance and counsel to the school on media relations, PR strategy and other communications initiatives

Prepare talking points for appropriate faculty/staff, for interviews across all media formats, and coordinate their interviews

Provide individual and group media training (ongoing and as needed for specific opportunities)

Represent the school at events or conferences that require a public relations presence, and ensure appropriate materials are completed and available, as required

Track, monitor, and evaluate PR strategies and media impressions

Craft and repurpose content for the website and social media

Comply with all aspects of the law school’s Customer Service Standards

REQUIREMENTS:

Outstanding writing and proofreading skills, with an emphasis on journalistic-style writing, persuasive writing, feature writing – often in the form of a press release or media alert

Strong familiarity with and experience using Associated Press style

Creative, curious, detail-oriented, accurate, organized, analytical, flexible and able to meet deadlines

Excellent time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Able to communicate effectively internally and externally, with peer and executive levels, and with students, alumni and volunteers

Strong media relations skills

Experience in the legal field is a plus

Houston and/or law media knowledge is a plus

Able to work in a diverse team

Ability to work and collaborate on all levels as a team member

Degree in journalism, communication, public relations, marketing (with writing emphasis), English or related field

Minimum three years of direct experience in public relations (writing, dealing with the media, utilizing technology/social media tools to communicate), preferably in a higher education or legal environment

Note: Consideration will be given to individuals who have experience working in professional media (newspaper/TV stations), if they can demonstrate the ability to handle the PR job responsibilities

Strong written and oral communication skills

Experience in multiple forms of writing, including press releases/media alerts, promotional materials, complex correspondence, web pages, and speeches

Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one, small group, or large group situations with a variety of audiences, including media contacts, faculty, students, alumni, staff

Able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking, non-smoking work environment

Able to work the general business schedule of the law school (8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) plus occasional evenings and weekends as necessary for events or media opportunities
