South Texas College of Law Houston is currently seeking to hire a Director of Strategic Communications. In addition to serving as editor of InRe, the law school’s annual print publication, you will develop a strategic focus and content for an institutional blog. You will also be a brand ambassador and you will partner with the AVP to develop branded materials and with the director of creative services to ensure the ordering of appropriate branded promotional items. The selected candidate will support other departments with their communication goals and strategy.


Develop strategy/content for fresh marketing materials with the AVP, and determine a creative way to add podcasts (or other innovative communication channels) to the communications mix

Develop strategic communication plans for the institution and for its key departments/ programs

Update the institutions communications standards using brand standards and Associated Press (AP) style guidelines, and distribute the standards to units across the law school

Write, edit, and proofread materials written by others in the institution, which may include letters, proposals, plans, marketing brochures, magazine articles, and other documents

Write and edit correspondence and other material for the President and Dean, working closely with the president to understand his “voice” and communications preferences. (This may be in partnership with the AVP, Marketing and Communications)

Act as editor for the school’s magazine (AVP is managing editor), providing proactive project leadership in all magazine efforts, including theme development, story assignments, article flow

Work closely with the design team to produce appropriate photography and layout, and to ensure printing and distribution plans meet needs and expectations

Compile appropriate mailing lists and distribute the magazine within the defined budget and deadline parameters

Provide oversight or creation of development-related pieces, short features, content for the law school’s website, e-newsletters, and alumni communications (both electronic and print)

Shape and implement tactics to support fundraising communications for all areas, including materials development, event support (strategy and messaging), and online marketing and outreach

Oversee the strategic development of communication strategies for fundraising campaigns such as online fundraising, major gifts, planned giving, direct mail, and other annual giving programs

Support fundraising and stewardship events by producing and informing constituent groups on talking points, including appropriate messaging for the President and Dean

Provide content and photos for the law school’s social media sites, working closely with the AVP and director, multimedia in promoting the school, its events, activities, faculty and alumni

Craft timely website content, proactively manage content for internal audiences, support key partners with research/written materials, build and implement a strategic content calendar

Support consistent intranet communications, emergency communications, marketing publications, speeches, institutional presentations, feature stories for the website and publications, and more

Help develop/repurpose content for our social media channels and the website

Manage multiple concurrent projects with tact and diplomacy, frequently under tight deadlines

Other writing assignments as needed for any unit within the institution requiring communications needs

Work collegially with people across campus, including students, the advancement team, student life, admissions, faculty, senior management as well as alumni, media, contractors and other community representatives, and donors

Comply with all aspects of the law school’s Customer Service Standards

Fast and accurate producer of content

Communicates exceptionally well in a variety of styles including campaign case statements, magazine stories, faculty/student/alumni profiles, marketing brochures, direct mail appeals, as well as more formal proposals, whitepapers, and newsletter content, web copy, and other documents for use with recruiting/admissions or with donors and potential donors in promoting the fundraising goals of the school

Comfortable writing about topics related to the law and legal education for a lay audience

Excellent writing and editing skills spanning multiple styles is required; strong understanding of and adherence to Associated Press (AP) standards

Outstanding project management and leadership skills are required to manage multiple projects that cross departmental lines, ensuring the highest standards in work output

Ability to work independently or collaboratively with a team, to prioritize project workload involving a variety of communications channels with minimum supervision

Able to manage multiple priorities and work as part of a team in a complex and fast-moving environment to meet deadlines is essential

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field

7 or more years of experience in creating and leading communications projects

Proficient in both spoken and written English

Ability to interpret and explain complex data

Able to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients and other employees of the organization

Able to work in an extremely fast paced, multi-tasking, non-smoking work environment

Able to work the general business schedule of the (8-4:30 or 9-5:30) plus occasional evenings and weekends as necessary
