OpenStax (part of Rice University) is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research. Our mission is to provide every student with free or low-cost access to high-quality learning materials and tools that help them succeed in their education and career. We have created a library of 32 free and openly licensed college and advanced placement textbooks, serving over 2.7 million students each year and resulting in $576 million dollars saved since 2012. We have created software to help college students in three of those subjects read with more engagement and practice more effectively, incorporating our research team’s expertise in cognitive science and machine learning.

We are currently seeking to hire a Marketing and Communications Specialist. In this role, you will be a key OpenStax team member who helps drives sustainability efforts for OpenStax. Working with over 50 for-profit partners, the Marketing and Communications Specialist II will plan, develop, and execute metrics-driven strategic marketing initiatives to increase usage of OpenStax Ally products, resulting in increased sales for OpenStax Allies and increased sustainability revenue for OpenStax. You will also coordinate the marketing team’s email efforts, working with the marketing team to build and test automated drip campaigns, as well as plan, develop, test, and execute email sends to various lists that support marketing efforts for all OpenStax products.


Develops and manages the communication and brand strategy for individual program(s) incorporating appropriate channels

Recommends, manages, and executes integrated marketing plans/programs and strategies to meet business objectives

Guides event planning and execution

Manages vendors on specific projects

Manages program budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals

Manages market research and analysis used to make informed decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting

Assesses market opportunities and tracks market trends

Recommends marketing improvements based on findings

Writes, designs, and coordinates the production of communication and marketing pieces

Performs all other duties as assigned

Works with over 50 partner companies, OpenStax Allies, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator will plan, develop, and executive metrics-driven strategic marketing initiatives to increase usage of OpenStax Ally products

Promotes OpenStax Ally joint offerings at trade shows, through webinars, social media, and public relations efforts

Ensures brand compliance among partners; regularly monitors partner content on and ensures it’s up to date and correct; monitors Google Analytics for partner-related initiatives to determine the success of campaigns

Works with the assistant director of marketing and communications on initiatives to increase OpenStax Ally product usage and lead generation

Coordinates the organization’s email efforts

Works with the marketing and communications team to contribute to the development of marketing strategies for OpenStax products and services, and leads the developing, testing, sending, and reporting email efforts

Fulfills general marketing and communications duties to support the team as assigned


Bachelor's Degree

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, communications, public relations, English, or related majors

3 years of experience in marketing, communications or other closely related field

Experience using customer relationship management systems (CRM) is preferred

Experience developing metrics-driven marketing campaigns is preferred

Experience in higher education or academic publishing is preferred

Experience editing website content using a content management system (CMS) is preferred
