For more than 100 years, Port Houston has owned and operated the public wharves and terminals along the Houston Ship Channel, including the area’s largest breakbulk facility and two of the most efficient container terminals in the country. Port Houston is the advocate and a strategic leader for the Channel. The Houston Ship Channel complex and its more than 200 public and private terminals, collectively known as the Port of Houston, is the nation’s largest port for waterborne tonnage and an essential economic engine for the Houston region, the state of Texas and the U.S.

The Port of Houston supports the creation of nearly 1.35 million jobs in Texas and 3.2 million jobs nationwide, and economic activity totaling $339 billion in Texas – 20 percent of Texas’ total gross domestic product (GDP) – and $801.9 billion in economic impact across the nation.

We are currently seeking to hire a Marketing Communication Specialist. In this role, you will collaborate with leadership and management to employ effective marketing initiatives that support Port Houston’s organizational strategies and objectives. You will write articles, speeches, letters, press releases and other items for a variety of audiences. In addition, you will recommend, develop, analyze, execute, and review traditional and digital marketing and communications. The selected candidate will coordinate a broad assortment of events from concept to completion.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Writing, editing, and proofreading content including but not limited to: website copy, blog posts, case studies, email content, press releases, scripts, speeches and talking points

Lead writer and editor for our internal publications, the Navigator Magazine and annual report

Implement communication best practices, provides support to leadership and develops coordinated messaging using Associated Press (AP) style

Provide editing support for video and audio projects

Collaborate within the Marketing and Branding team on messaging that supports the development and implementation of content, keeping brand and strategic goals top of mind

Distribute press releases

Create speech PPT presentations

Coordinate and execute events related to customer receptions, sponsorships, conferences, trade shows and meetings etc.; oversee all aspects of the event with responsibility for sourcing, securing venue, vendor contract negotiations and payment, building invite lists, and marketing and branding the event

Monitor and maintain marketing automation platforms to support email marketing campaigns and CRM (Customer Relationship Management), such as HubSpot, etc.

Create and execute email campaigns for special events, news, and/or promotions

Produce content for printed, social, and web platforms

Formulate, develop, and update collateral to support Port Houston

Coordinate internal departmental promo items as needed and oversee promo vendors

Perform website content updates as needed

Process invoices and track budget; monitor discrepancies to assist in negotiating creditor billing adjustments as necessary

Ensure contractual compliance

Help maintain Port Houston brand standards

Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you)

Act as a Port Houston brand ambassador

Perform other duties as needed

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related major in a public or accredited private academic institution is preferred

3+ years of related corporate communications experience is desired

Demonstrated writing skills for a variety of audiences

Knowledge of AP Style

Knowledge of maritime industry is a plus

Knowledge of traditional and digital marketing

Knowledge of principals and best practices of marketing

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Photoshop, email marketing platforms, Google products and CRM

Knowledge of creating and editing HTML for email and web
