Second Servings is Houston’s only prepared and perishable food rescue organization. We pick up unserved and unsold food from food businesses (distributors, retailers, hotels, sports venues, and others), and deliver it the same day to more than 60 approved charity sites (shelters, soup kitchens, low-income housing and others) serving over 135,000 people each year. Our wholesome food helps nourish veterans, adults in recovery, abused women and children, at-risk youth, disabled homeless seniors, developmentally challenged adults, LGBTQ community, low- income single adults, and many others. In just 4 years, we’ve rescued 2 million pounds of food valued at over $10 million from more than 175 donor’s (food that was destined for the landfill, but is now feeding people)

Second Servings’ goal is to ensure its sustainability and scalability by increasing awareness and philanthropic support. The Marketing & Development Manager is a new position, reporting to the Founder/President, which requires a passion for the organization’s mission and a strong desire and ability to help the organization reach its full potential. The successful candidate is ambitious, creative, hard-working, and flexible, with a strong sense of urgency.


Developing an annual Marketing & Development plan, with targeted goals, objectives, strategies, tactics, and timelines

Identifying foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and individuals to generate operating and capacity building

Helping write new grants, reporting progress, and tracking deadlines

Developing partnerships and strategic alliances with local businesses that will generate awareness and funding opportunities

Creating and executing a communications plan to ensure target audiences (current food and financial donors) are reached with appropriate frequency and thoughtful, creative, and strategic messages

Executing the marketing plan, including media relations, press releases, social media, special events and fundraisers, website, newsletters, and other branding opportunities (such as Food Rescue Squad events)

Growing brand awareness among potential food donors through speaking engagements and participation at professional culinary associations and food industry conferences

Cultivating awareness among civic organizations, business networking groups, and corporations to expand financial network and volunteer engagement

Creating and managing promotional and marketing collateral

Coordinating with other staff members on events

Identifying needs and developing a plan for new staff and/or outside agency contracting, to enable expansion


Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

Bachelor's Degree required, plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in marketing and fundraising

Proven success in areas of individual and corporate giving, as well as grant writing and funding

Active on social media and experienced in email marketing programs

Outgoing, flexible team player, who loves collaboration

Ambitious professional, with demonstrated leadership skills, good creative judgment, and ability to think strategically

Working mastery of computer programs including: Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel; competent in SALESFORCE, Raiser’s Edge, or another CRM program; experienced in Adobe Creative Suite
