Houston Methodist is currently seeking to hire a Senior Copywriter. In this role, you will be responsible for conceptualizing, researching, writing, and editing content for Houston Methodist marketing initiatives. You will author effective communications, which will target patients, consumers and physicians. The selected candidate will create communication that is persuasive, creative, and informative and follows the Houston Methodist Leading Medicine brand. This includes working in various media channels such as, but not limited to: advertising, scripts, annual reports, newsletters, brochures and other major marketing print and digital collateral.


Works closely with subject matter experts and clients to develop strong, clear and concise writing that appeals to the intended audience and champions the Houston Methodist brand; understands client needs and develops content aligned to promote HM services, properly reflecting the brand

Production of writing assignments for high profile areas requiring an in-depth understanding of Houston Methodist business and operations, including Centers of Excellence, Hospital and Systemwide Service Lines, Programs and Brand

Collaborates with, Creative Services, the Branding team and VP of Marketing to develop key messages that support the Houston Methodist messaging strategy across all channels and formats

Serves as a mentor to other writers/editors within the marketing department

Develops concepts and content for a wide variety of projects, including but not limited to ads, brochures, annual reports, fliers, direct mail and other consumer pieces

Writes and proofreads marketing copy, reports, case statements, acknowledgement letters, newsletters and/or magazine articles, special correspondence, promotional materials and other communication pieces

Collaborates with wider marketing team and stakeholders throughout the organization to conceptualize, develop and/or revise content that meets expressed strategic goals

Ensures writing is of Leading Medicine quality; writing should be stellar in grammar, style and tone. Short and long-form copy should be versatile, as well as effective for headlines, taglines, and calls to action

Acts as a brand steward, ensuring all messaging and copy is within brand voice and editorial guidelines

Meets writing and content development deadlines to ensure quick turnarounds in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment

Updates existing content to improve value to the consumer

Keeps up with best practices in marketing writing, sharing relevant ideas with the team and implementing where appropriate

Continuously applies learnings and best practices to improve efficiency of content development and deployment process


Bachelor’s degree in Communication, English, Journalism, or related field

Minimum of 7 years in a professional copywriting role

Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job

Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Ability to work both independently of and cooperatively with team members

A thorough knowledge of contemporary editorial and web practices

Exceptional skill in translating health care information to consumer audiences

Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Exceptional understanding of HM brand and the ability to reflect the brand identity through marketing copy

Deep understanding HM business and operations, HM Hospital and Systemwide Service Lines and Programs

Advanced proficiency with Microsoft office applications and Adobe Creative Suite and other desktop publishing apps
