HOUSTON, TX (March 20, 2012) The American Marketing Association (AMA) Houston Chapter announced Discovery Green as the 2011 Marketer of the Year last Monday night during the AMA’s annual awards ceremony at the Alley Theatre. The Marketer of the Year award honors exceptional marketing by Houston-area companies, organizations and institutions. Discovery Green was selected from among 34 previously named Best of Category Winners, who were also recognized at the event. Discovery Green won Best of Category for “Venues and Arenas” in addition to winning the 2011 Marketer of the Year Award.

Discovery Green designs its programming to connect with specific audiences and to position itself as Houston’s “Village Green.” Since opening in 2008, attendance has reached 3.5 million, more than double the projections. In marketing, they leverage online, print, email marketing, advertising, media relations, sponsorships and partnerships, social media, web site marketing and in-park signage. In 2011, Discovery Green launched the Insperity Golf Experience and Discovery Green Flea, to attract new visitors to the park.

Representing last year’s Marketer of the Year, Tory Teykl, Director for Marketing, Promotions and Sales for The University of Houston Cougars was on hand to present Discovery Green with its award. This year’s Marketer of the Year keynote speaker was Jim Compton, executive vice president and chief revenue officer for United Airlines. Compton, former executive vice president and CMO for Continental Airlines, spoke on the marketing challenges and strategies involved in merging Continental and United to form the world’s largest airline.

This year AMA named 34 Best of Category Winners who were selected from more than 145 nominated companies, organizations and institutions. Member voting and scoring by a panel of local marketing professionals determined the Best of Category Winners. Best of Category Winners then submitted detailed information regarding their marketing program’s challenges and achievements. This information was reviewed by a specially selected group of leading marketing professionals outside of Houston who chose Discovery Green as AMA Houston’s 2011 Marketer of the Year.

Prior winners include Blinds.com (2009), Kelsey-Seybold Clinic (2008), the Houston Zoo (2007), Weatherford International (2006) and the Houston Symphony (2005).
