HOUSTON, TX – March 5, 2014 – The American Marketing Association (AMA) Houston Chapter recognized the YMCA of Greater Houston as the 2013 Marketer of the Year on Monday night, March 3, 2014, during AMA Houston’s annual awards ceremony at the Alley Theatre. The Marketer of the Year award honors exceptional marketing by Houston-area companies, organizations and institutions. YMCA of Greater Houston was selected by the final-round judging panel from among 26 previously named Best of Category winning organizations that were also recognized at the event. The YMCA had won Best of Category for Social Services as a first step toward becoming the 2013 Marketer of the Year.

Representing last year’s Marketer of the Year, Linda Kilgore of Aliana Development Company presented the award to the YMCA of Greater Houston’s marketing team. The YMCA of Greater Houston used storytelling in their marketing program, spotlighting real members which humanized the Y and showed how it builds healthy spirits and minds. They solicited member stories and featured them in “You Are Why” stories in the annual report, direct mail, web content, radio and TV ads, billboards, posters, fliers and email headers. New memberships reached 7,600, exceeding their 5,000 goal by 50%, and they increased awareness of the Y’s positive impact on the Houston area. Overall revenue increased 5.6%.

The evening’s keynote speaker was David Bunch, Global VP Marketing, Shell Retail & Chairman of Shell Brands International, who spoke on The Future of Branding. Bunch leads a global team in 70 countries that is responsible for the development of all the brand and communications, products, sponsorships, convenience stores and loyalty programs in Shell’s 43,000 locations. Bunch’s team also oversees the development of the Shell brand globally.

A vote of chapter members combined with votes from a panel of 16 local marketing professionals determined the 26 Best of Category winners from over 130 nominations. A final-round judging panel of 16 marketing professionals from across the country scored each Best of Category Winner’s marketing program on multiple criteria to determine AMA Houston’s 2013 Marketer of the Year.
